Summary

Did you know that there is an egalitarian “silver bullet” Bible verse? Many egalitarians (who hold that women can rightly be elders, or any other position in the church) see Galatians 3:28 as such a powerful and wide-sweeping statement that it overrules any interpretation of any other passage in the Bible that would restrict roles of women in any fashion. In my own experience, every egalitarian knows about this but many complementarians do not. In this video, part 7 of my Women in Ministry series, I’ll be doing a detailed analysis of egalitarian scholar, Cynthia Long Westfall’s case for why Galatians 3:28 is such a pivotal passage for understanding women’s roles and for proving that complementarian views are fundamentally wrong. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28 After years of being a bit confused about the topic of women in ministry I set out to spend months researching the topic in great detail to produce this exhaustive teaching series on the topic. While I thoroughly disagree with it in a somewhat continual manner, it's a good resource for cutting edge egalitarian scholarship. Alright, here we go. This is the egalitarian silver bullet. This is like the one

0:07.0

verse for the egalitarian side that can tend to be like game over. Like the whole

0:12.4

discussion is is conquered by this verse. I'm gonna explain what I mean by that

0:16.6

but I don't think I'm exaggerating. Many egalitarians, not just a few random

0:20.5

people, many use it for this very purpose. So in the important and sometimes

0:24.9

raging debate, hold on a second, someone's calling me or something. Okay, YouTube's

0:30.3

just telling me on the live. Thanks, I knew that. In the important and sometimes

0:34.4

raging sadly and sniping debate over women in ministry, there are generally two

0:40.5

sides. Side one, that is those who think that there are some limits on what

0:45.5

women should or should not do in ministry such as one that that there's a lot

0:49.7

of people within this side, different groups, but one they would mostly all

0:52.7

agree on is that women should not be elders in the local church in the

0:56.7

biblical sense of elder. Okay, so sometimes the word pastor has that biblical

1:00.5

meaning other times it doesn't. That's the way churches are. Sometimes they use

1:03.1

word priest, which shouldn't be actually used in a biblical sense. The second

1:08.4

side though, now that side's called either complementarians or sometimes

1:11.4

patriarchalists or hierarchalists or other names. The other side though, side

1:17.0

two are those who think there's no such limits on women as far as their role in

1:21.8

ministry. There's just zero limits there. These, these would say, hey, there can

1:26.6

be any ministry position in existence and there can be men and women both

1:30.8

filling that role. There's no problem there. There's no issue with a woman

having teaching and having authority over men in any church context. That's the
