Summary

Raising kids with anxiety or OCD is hard enough. But when you add chronic pain to your daily routine it can push you over the edge. Often we backburner our own issues. We tell ourselves that we don’t have time for our struggles. That we don’t have time to address our needs. We push through and do more damage in the end.

But the truth is if you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to effectively take care of your child. Helping a child with anxiety or OCD is exhausting and chronic pain will only add to that fatigue.

In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk to Dr. Andrea Durand, my go-to expert on all things pain related. She explores our relationship with chronic pain and discusses ways we can address the pain to minimize its impact on our daily lives.

0:22.3

Hello there, and welcome to another episode of the AT Parenting Survival Podcast.

0:30.2

I really try to provide you with some topics that are for you, and I know that sometimes it's

0:36.5

hard to get out of the loop of thinking about how to help your child with anxiety or OCD,

0:41.6

and focus that attention on you, and I hope that sometimes if you are a frequent listener of

0:47.6

my podcast, that this kind of helps you shift your perspective sometimes and re-focus on what

0:54.0

do you need? What will be helpful for you? Because, you know, that old cheesy saying you have to

1:00.4

put on your own oxygen mask before you put it on your kids is legitimate. If you are running

1:05.7

on fumes and you are exhausted and you are overwhelmed, there's just no way you're going to be

1:11.0

able to help your kids in the way that you want to show up. And that is why I've invited my friend

1:16.3

and longtime colleague Dr. Andrea Durant to the show because she is, I have go to experts for

1:22.5

all various topics, and she is my go-to expert for a couple of different things, but one of them

1:29.1

is chronic pain. And it is so far out of my wheelhouse that I didn't think it even involved me

1:35.6

until I realized as I was diving through her own resources that I struggle greatly with chronic

1:41.6

pain. And the way I was approaching my chronic pain was not helpful at all. So we will dive into

1:48.8

that in a second and I hope that you find it helpful. And listen to it even if you think,

1:53.0

I don't think I have chronic pain, like I have some pain, but I don't think it's chronic. It is

1:59.2

helpful to listen to it because I didn't think I was in that category either until I realized that
