This story was first published in the San Francisco Examiner July 14th, 1889.

Ambrose Beers is one of my favorite American authors.

We've run his stories before in episodes 200, 643, and 921.

He's known for three things. His journalism work in San Francisco, his bitter literary stories about the Civil War,

and his role in pioneering the psychological horror story. Oh, and also that in late 1913,

he disappeared without a trace, and to this day nobody knows what happened to him.

Ben Phillips, our narrator for this story, is a programmer and musician living in New Orleans.

He was a chief editor of pseudopod from 2006 to 2010.

He occasionally writes and records songs as painful reminder.
