John has been a finalist for the International Horror Guild Award, a Bramstoker nominee for Best Collection, most recently for Sophia and other betrayals, and has won the Bramstoker for his excellent novel The Fisherman.

He's on the Board of Directors for the Shirley Jackson awards and remains a fiercely prolific author.

This story was first published in Poe 19 Tales of Suspends, Dark Fantasy and Horror back in 2009. It's also worth pointing out to you that there is an excellent

podcast on the narration of the Edgar Allan Poe story that inspired this one. It's a little

known but cult favorite story called The Mask of the Red Death and you can find it over at our much loved flying castle chums and in our show notes.
