Beyond the Dead Reef by James Tiptree Jr.

I'm Lisa Yazick, a professor of science fiction studies at Georgia Tech.

My research and teaching explores science fiction as a global language that allows us to communicate

our experiences with science and technology across centuries, continents, and cultures. I'm particularly interested in women's science fiction

and my books include both scholarly studies such as Galactic Suburbia, recovering women's science fiction,

and edited volumes including Sisters of Tomorrow, the First Women of

Science Fiction, and the forthcoming, The Future is Female, 25 Classic Science Fiction stories by

women from Pulp Pioneers to Ursula K. Leguin. I'm particularly pleased to

host this episode of Pseudopod because Tiptree has been such an important figure

in the history of women science fiction. James Tiptree Jr. was the pseudonym of Alice B Sheldon, who was born in 1915 and died in 1987.

As a child, she traveled frequently to Africa with her parents for big game hunting.

At the age of nine, she became the star of an illustrator for Alice in Elephant Land,

a children's book written by her mother detailing their adventures in Africa.

As an adult, Tiptree continued to live a life of adventure, serving as a photo intelligence officer

in World War II and then as a CIA agent afterward.

All these experiences were influential on her stories, including her in-depth understanding of national and international responses to crises.

After her career with the CIA, Tiptree pursued a PhD at George Washington University in experimental psychology,
