When it comes to pruning in the garden, whether it be a vegetable, fruit, etc., I think

0:18.0

a lot of the times gardeners can get scared because what if you make a mistake, did you kill

0:23.0

your plant, did you hamper its growth, and with roses I think it's no different, which

0:26.9

is why I'm excited that we have Rebecca Karatum on the show. She's a horticulturist at

0:31.7

David Austin Roses. Rebecca, we talked a little bit yesterday about care, planting just

0:38.3

a lot about some of the unique requirements that roses do have. I know that you had mentioned

0:44.7

when you prune, it's oftentimes somewhat around the time that you do the first feed. I thought

0:49.2

maybe before we get into pruning, we could talk just really quickly about a feeding schedule

0:53.1

works for you, and depending on where you are in the country, if you're in a really hot

1:30.2

humid area, you probably do need some kind of disease control to help you along, and there's no

1:36.8

shame in it. But, you know, do what you have to do. Normally, a good, simple rule of thumb

1:46.2

is if the rose has finished the flush, it's going to want to eat so that it can flower again.

1:54.6

So roughly every six to eight weeks on David Austin, and again, follow the label directions,

2:03.7

and don't overfeed because when you overfeed, you put too much nitrogen in the soil,

2:10.3

you are going to increase disease problems. Yeah, yeah, it's a great point. Rebecca, are there

2:20.2

general best practices, dos and don'ts of how to prune, or does it depend on the type of rose that

2:26.8

you're growing? Well, a little bit depends on the type of the rose you're growing. First of all,

2:31.9

don't be afraid. No one ever truly killed a rose because they pruned it wrong, okay? But many
