First, Georgia, which sits on strategic crossroads between Europe and Asia, has long been torn

between wanting closer ties with the West, while still unable to ignore its historic ties

with Moscow.

Perceived Russian influences what brought tens of thousands of protesters out onto the streets

of Georgia recently, after the parliament put forward a controversial law which would

class NGOs and media groups as foreign agents if they receive more than 20% of their funds

from overseas.

A similar law in Russia has been used to severely limit press freedom and suppress civil

society.

And while the proposed law has been retracted for now, many Georgians fear Russian-style

curbs on dissent.
