and indefatigable human rights campaigns of our lifetime. He first came to prominence in the

infamous 1983 bermency by-election, the most homophobic election ever in British history, he called it, when he stood

for labour and was subject to astonishing attacks from the press, his opponents and some of his

own party, as well as physical assaults.

Many of those verbal attacks will be considered criminal offenses under

today's legislation. Since then he's fought for LGBT rights in the UK and beyond, he twice attempted

to make it a citizen's arrest of Robert Mugabe and the issues he's campaigned upon have never conformed to straightforward

party lines. For instance he was against both the Iraq war and extreme politicized Islam and he's

defended the right to speak for people like Julie Bindel and Jermaine Greer, ironically earning himself
