Summary

Child abuse - it's heinous, it's a crime, it's a shame, and it's a sin. Unfortunately, it's quite pervasive in the Church which is often a soft target. Why is that, and what can we do to guard our flock more preventatively instead of reactively? We certainly need to educate our children and train our nursery workers, but how do we impart discernment while not making them critical of everyone. We all have roles of protecting our children, but even some actions of "justice" can further enable the abuse. This is by no means an exhaustive conversation answering all these questions in depth but a discussion that should put any Church worker on high alert. You can puchase all the messages from the event "Sex, Sin, and Salvation: God's Grace in a Fallen World".

0:30.6

Let's join this week's conversation.

0:32.8

Thank you. Well, welcome to the mortification of spin.

0:46.7

We're so grateful that you chose to spend some time with us today.

0:49.8

Well, our subject is a serious one.

0:53.4

It is a topic that we would love to be able to put to rest once and for all.

0:59.7

But unfortunately, as we all know, it's one that continues to come up through headlines

1:04.9

and through stories that so many of us are familiar with.

1:08.4

And it's the issue of child abuse within the church. It's a grievous

1:12.4

reality. It is a heinous sin. And of course, it's a crime as well. And because we continue to see

1:22.5

stories confirming that child abuse continues to be a problem within the church, it's important that we

1:29.5

continue to shine a light on it in various ways, hoping to awaken the laity and awaken the

1:36.3

leadership of churches to this continuing problem, as well as to encourage churches to have

1:43.1

policies put in place and strenuously practiced to try to

1:48.3

mitigate against this issue. And I say mitigate against it because I would imagine that so long

1:53.9

as we are south of heaven, we will always have predators among us. So let's throw the topic open.

2:02.9

There's several ways we want to go at this, but Carl, I was wondering if you want to kind of direct our next avenue in regard to our discussion.

2:09.2

Yeah, the first thing I want to highlight is the relationship between the civic sphere and the

2:14.6

church sphere. I think a lot of Christians have a rather sentimental view

2:19.6

that crimes within the church, or certain crimes within the church, should be dealt with by the

2:25.7

church. Nobody makes that case for murder, incidentally, but you do hear cases, sometimes when
