So the criminal cases against the people who attacked the US Capitol on January 6th are building.

And now we're starting to hear about prosecutors indicting conspiracy charges against some of the groups involved in the attack on the capital.

Let's talk about why conspiracy charges are important.

But first let's look at the recent reporting on this topic, this from NPR.

Prosecutors alleged substantial evidence of oath keepers conspiracy to storm the capital.

And here's how that article begins.

The founder of the oath keeper militia had a 97 second phone call with a senior member of the group who, minutes later, took part in a military style stack formation with other oath keepers to breach the US Capitol on January 6th according to federal prosecutors.

And that article continues.

Prosecutors alleged that the call along with a series of text messages in an encrypted chat group called DCOP January 6th, 21,

amount to substantial evidence of a conspiracy to try to stop Congress's certification of the electoral college count.

Why is this important?

Well, first of all, what is a conspiracy? A conspiracy is nothing more than two or more people getting together and agreeing to commit a crime.

And then one of those people taking one step toward the commission of the crime, something we call an overt act.

Let me give you a quick example.

If myself and a friend agree to rob a bank, and my friend is going to get the gun that we're going to use in the robbery, and I'm going to rent a car that we're going to use in the bank robbery.

So my friend gets the gun, I rent the car, but then we say, you know what?

We've decided against robbing the bank.

We may not have committed the crime of bank robbery, but you know what?
