We're talking about another Gardening Method. I might as well just make it a Gardening

0:07.7

Week because I'm having some fun with it, doing some research of my own, and this one is

0:11.8

near and dear to my heart. This is Square Foot Gardening. I worked with Mel Bartholomew when I first started gardening back in 2010. I was doing some work with him on his nonprofit foundation.

0:24.8

Unfortunately, last year he passed away, but I learned so much from him and he was just

0:30.1

a brilliant guy and clearly struck a chord with many gardeners around the world as the

0:34.8

Square for Gardening Book I believe sold somewhere over 2 million copies which is just mind-boggling because as I used to work in publishing no book

two million in gardening is just insane and

grid of one foot squares which is where it's getting the name square foot

1:29.6

gardening. So in a four foot by four foot bed of course you're going to have 16 squares.

1:35.0

Each of these squares are going to be managed individually and almost treated as if they are one individual plot of land. So depending on the type of seed you plant, there's a

1:46.4

different density. So something like lettuce is typically planted at four

1:51.2

per square foot and something like radish is

1:54.3

anywhere around 16 per square foot. Tomato again it's a larger plant that's one

2:00.6

per square foot. Now the reason Mel chose a four foot by four foot bed is

2:04.8

because most people have an arm reach length of two feet which means that from
