Summary

In episode 447 historians Patrick Curry and Nicholas Campion join me to discuss the recent republication of Patrick's groundbreaking book Prophecy and Power: Astrology in Early Modern England, which documents the rise and fall of astrology in the 17th century. Originally published in 1989, the book offers a detailed analysis of the role and perception of astrology in 17th-century England, a period that saw both the peak and the subsequent decline of astrology in the public sphere. Patrick shares insights from his PhD research at University College London, which formed the basis of his book. He discussed the socio-political dynamics of the era, particularly how the English Civil War influenced astrological practices and the lives of astrologers like William Lilly. Nicholas Campion, known for his comprehensive two-volume "A History of Western Astrology," contributed to the conversation by discussing the academic and historical context in which Patrick's book was first published and its impact on the field. We also delved into the broader implications of the historical treatment of astrology, discussing how historical narratives have shifted from outright dismissal of astrology to a more nuanced understanding of its role in historical contexts. Both Patrick and Nick emphasize the importance of viewing astrology through the lens of the cultural and political milieu of its time, rather than simply through modern scientific critiques. The episode also touches on the challenges faced by astrologers during politically turbulent times, and how part of what contributed to the decline of astrology in the 17th century was that it became associated with political views that fell out of favor. Patrick's book was recently republished by the Sophia Centre Press, and you can order it here: Prophecy and Power: Astrology in Early Modern England This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Thank you so much for joining me today.

So this is an exciting moment to be talking with you both because this was a pretty significant book in terms of the history of astrology and in terms of historical discussions about astrology, especially in an academic context that was published in the mid to late 1980s, and you've just decided to republish it after all of these years, right?

1:00.0

Yeah, sure, we're doing a second edition through the Sophia Center press. I mean, it's substantially unchanged, we just have a new forward but Patrick's

1:05.2

text is completely unchanged we thought don't tamper with something which works

1:10.1

so well. So what year was the book originally published? The book was originally

1:17.2

published in 1989 and shall I give you a little bit of the background to it?

1:25.0

Please, I'd love to hear it.

1:27.0

Well, I did my PhD in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at University College London in 1987.

1:36.4

I finished that in 1987.

1:38.9

And so I basically turned my thesis, not all of it, but most of it into the book on the same subject.

1:46.6

And that was how prophecy and power came to be published by Paul de Press in 1989. And of course that was nearly 40 years ago so it must have

1:56.2

some life in it because it's just been published in a second edition thanks to

2:00.4

the Sophia Center press with a new forward by Darrell Rutkin, a really excellent new forward.

2:08.0

And so that's how it came about from my point of view.

2:13.0

Yeah, and in the meantime, so much scholarship has been done on astrology and Nick, your also landmark two volume history of astrology came out in the late 2000s

2:26.1
