At the end of today's program, I'm going to review the fifth season of Black

Mirror.

So this is your spoiler alert that I will be talking about those

episodes in detail and in an unnecessarily agitated tone. Before that I'm going to

talk to Eric Davis, a writer who probes the intersections of myth, magic, and technology, the author of the new book High Weirdness.

A look at the psychedelic futurist counterculture of the was a pretty big influence on me as a teen. His aluminatus trilogy tackles the entirety of the

conspiratorial worldview with a caustic cynicism that highlights the absurdity and

playfulness of these narratives that are ultimately best understood as fiction.

But later in life, Wilson, like Dick, began to get high on his own sci-fi supply, and Davis'

book is a masterful deconstruction of that phenomena, which I think

it gets at the heart of my interest in the subject matter of this podcast. I just want to note

that Eric and I did this interview on a lovely afternoon

walking around his old neighborhood, the East Village,

but the first bit was cut off, so my apologies for that,

and the slightly reduced audio quality as well.
