The tree that never had to fight for sun and sky and air and light, but stood out in the open plane and

always got its sheer of rain, never became a forest king, but lived and died a scrubby thing.

The one who never had to toil to gain and farm their patch of soil,

never had to win their share of sun and sky and light and air,

never became the stronger one, but lived and died as they begun.

Good timber does not grow with ease, the stronger wind, the stronger trees, the further sky, the greater length, the more the storm, the more the strength.

By sun and cold, by rain and snow, in trees and us good timbers grow.

Where thickest lies in the forest growth,

we find the higher arcs of both.

And they hold counsel with the stars

whose broken branches show the scars of many winds and much of strife.

This is the common law of life.

I wish to preach not the doctrine of ignoble ease,

but the doctrine of strenuous life, the life of toil and effort and

labor and strife to preach the highest form of success which comes not to the

one who desires mere easy peace, but who does not shrink from danger, from hardship, or from bitter

toil, out of these winds, the splendid ultimate triumph.

It ain't going to be easy what we're up to.
