to some of the most infamous criminals in American history. Its inmates included George

Machine Gun Kelly and even Al Capone himself. It was designed to be a prison for America's most troublesome inmates,

as its armed guards towering steel walls and isolated location made escape seemingly impossible.

The penitentiary was built in the Rocky Alcatraz Island, a small but sinister-looking aisle

1.23 miles offshore from San Francisco.

That meant that even if an inmate made it out of the building somehow,

they'd then have to find their way across the natural, freezing-cold moat of San Francisco Bay.
