chapter 36 to 38. In the previous chapters,

Elizabeth is left reeling after Darsi's very rude proposal of marriage.

Her initial polite rejection soon turns to anger as she accuses him of deliberately breaking

up Jane and Bingley's relationship, which he admits to and

for mistreating Wickham.

The following day, Darcy gives Elizabeth the letter explaining his actions.

He admits to intervening between Jane and Bingley, believing Jane's feelings were not deep enough and wishing to protect his friend.

He also states that his conflict with Wickham stems from his leaching and deceptive behavior some years prior.
