This is John Batchelor, conversation with colleague Jack Burnham at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies

about the news that Vietnam has signed a

trade deal with the United States. It's a win-win, says Jack, for both. 20% tariffs on all

exports to the United States from Vietnam and 0% tariffs on all imports from U.S. to Vietnam. At the same time, Vietnam is maintaining

trade relations suggesting with China, suggesting that it is possible to deal with both the U.S.

and China at the same time in a country that is nominally Marxist, Leninist, and communist.

Vietnam is the way forward for the states that are concentrated in the hands of men and women

who claim to be socialist, that is communist. For example, China, Vietnam's doing very well. And here's Jack to explain why.

More of this tonight. I certainly think that Vietnam's goal has always been to use trade and use

manufacturing as a way to drive economic development for it. And I think as a result, Vietnam and Vietnamese firms have seen

China as a key supplier for a lot of inputs for advanced manufacturing goods, whether there's

be electric vehicles, solar panels, or other types of high-value goods that are allowed the Vietnamese

economy to continue to rise and develop. So as a result, I think it's a case of Vietnamese firms

simply shopping around for the best supplier. And in a lot of these sectors, the best supplier is

Chinese. And so rather than being a sinister plot, it's far more simply good business to
