Luke talks to Guardian columnist and activist George Monbiot about the extreme right’s appropriation of countercultural idioms and revolutionary language in the age of QAnon and COVID; the corrosion of community in the neoliberal era; and the desperate need for a new narrative of solidarity and common good in an age of resurgent fascism and ecological collapse. "It’s shocking to see so many leftwingers lured to the far right by conspiracy theories" by George Monbiot - https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/sep/22/leftwingers-far-right-conspiracy-theories-anti-vaxxers-power

of people uncritically accepting some of the themes, the memes, and the conspiracy theories generated on the right.

1:14.6

And I think the pandemic has greatly accelerated that.

1:18.6

And the sort of quite rightful suspicion of power on the left and on the green left and the hippie alternative countercultural scene

1:30.5

seems to have mutated with astonishing and really alarming speed

1:37.7

into an acceptance of any conspiracy theories based around powerful cabals,

taking away our freedoms, taking away our rights.

And the uncritical nature of that acceptance,

1:53.0

the preparedness to subscribe to themes which are racist, anti-Semitic,

which resonates strongly with certain themes in 20th century

European history is extremely alarming and needs urgently to be resisted.

2:13.6

So, I mean, you observed that there is a bit of a, there is precedent for this.

2:18.9

You know, the far right has for a long time, I mean, almost as a kind of structural element,

2:25.1

it could be argued, you know, it's embraced frames and themes and narratives that are drawn
