Hello and welcome to the symposium. A lot of you have asked us to do Marcus Aurelius and meditations and we're going to do just that and who better to join me than both?

As I said just ago, I really like talking to you and I think that it's a free lesson for me. And I hope you just take as much time as you want with the history stuff.

Okay? Right, so Mark Serrelius is in a sense of philosopher Emperor.

He is more than a philosopher king than that plate of hope for and he is a surprisingly good philosopher

but and I think also he was a good administrator and emperor. A good man it seems. Yeah. So he is

basically known for his meditations as far as philosophy is concerned and we need to say that his

meditations was just something like a personal diary he never intended for it to be

published or for it to be read as a treatise. It's you could say a form of practice where he writes to himself and he

remembers he reminds of himself several stuff.

So for instance, we say about the Stoics

that they constantly say that we should remember

that we are gonna die, the mementomori stuff. he constantly does this it's every fifth vote is about him

talking to himself about how nature changes and he is going to change by implication. I think it is like a diary.

The fact that you can buy it now, I think Marcus will really be appalled if he

knew that.

Probably he'd be embarrassed.

Yeah, the fact that it's called meditations

and it's broken into 12 books, all that was after the fact.

It was found in his possession after he died. Yeah, it was never he never wrote it for publication.

Yeah and let's say that he is one of the major Stoics, but he's also very late in Stoicism so Stoicism had been

a thing for about 500 years before he started writing his meditations it was a way of life you could say as much as it was a

philosophical way of thinking about the world. And you can say that the way he
