Summary

In the logical follow-up to our previous episode about 'smart cities,' we've brought on author and researcher Jathan Sadowski (@jathansadowski) to discuss what happened with Google's plan for self-adjusting sidewalks and cities with sideways elevators. You'll love it! So basically what they've said is Google has abandoned this project because in these times of economic uncertainty, one of the richest corporations in the world can't take

0:21.7

the risk on doing this. Now, what actually happened is something else, right, Jathan?

0:27.6

Yeah, I mean, from the very beginning, the moment it was announced in October of 2017,

0:33.6

there was just like this total sustained public opposition, right? You had a lot of organizing,

1:04.8

And they saw that as like this huge offense.

1:08.6

They were totally taken aback by the idea that the people that actually live in a city

1:13.2

would care what happens in that city.

1:16.5

And there was this sustained public opposition at almost every stage,

1:21.6

partly because what Google was going to do, right,

1:24.8

is they were going to say, yeah, what we're offering you

1:28.0

is we're going to say your bin collection won't change, but it will be way cheaper.

1:34.3

And what we're going to take from you is all of your information on everywhere you are

1:39.6

and everything you do at any time all the time.

1:42.1

And we're just, we're going to go through the garbage, but like, uh, it will remain fundamentally

1:47.7

the same.

1:48.9

And we're just going to build an effigy out of you using your toenail clippings.

1:52.0

It's not a big deal.

1:53.6

Yeah.

1:54.1

Why are you being weird about this?
