Good evening and welcome to the Sleepy Bookshelf. This season will be returning to one of our most popular authors on the Bookshelf as we read Emma by Jane Austen.

The following is a preview to give you an idea of what to expect from this season.

If you've been listening to the show since the beginning you've probably already heard our reading of Jane Austen's most famous novel, Pride and Pregidus.

Well many of you requested another book by her and we're happy to bring that to you now.

Emma was published in December 1815, two years after Pride and Pregidus.

Like the former novel it deals with the everyday life of Gentile families in England during the Regency period.

This period lasted from 1811 to 1820 when George IV acted as a regent after his father, King George III was deemed unable to rule competently anymore.

Emma is a comedy of manners and follows the trials and mishaps of the title character.

Emma amuses herself by playing Village Matchmaker often without thinking of the consequences of meddling in other people's affairs.

She's a complex character at times selfish, caring, independent, confident and aloof.

Written with Austen's characteristic wit and intelligence, Emma is a light-hearted, yet thoughtful story that reflects on the absurdities, constraints and social norms of her time.
