Wayne Luka and Theodore P. Wee Doyle, employees of the New Jersey Department of Transportation,

were on the 7.30am to 4.00pm shift. They drove a small yellow dump truck through Southampton Township,

a heavily wooded, sparsely populated expanse about two hours south of Manhattan.

The sunny and warm day began unremarkably, starting on Route 70, which cuts west to east through the

bottom of the township, Luka and Doyle drove toward the rest area in Burr's Mill. The men found

a couple of Department of Transportation trash cans, 55 gallon drums with tan plastic liners,

the usual haul, mostly the refuse of lunch, empty soda cans and half-eat and sandwiches.

They wrapped and tied the bags and heaved them onto the truck's bed.

Luka drove farther down Route 70 to the next rest stop, home to the Butler Place rest area,

nestled in the Lebanon State Forest. It was here that Luka sensed something was not quite right.

There were the usual tan bags, but there were bags piled around the barrels too.

One was white and lacked the heft of everyday debris. The white bag, Luka thought, felt heavy,

as if it contained a pumpkin. Everything was thrown into the back of the truck.

After Luka and Doyle returned to the maintenance yard, they began unloading the bags and tossing

them into a maroon dumpster. That's when Luka noticed that the white bag, the one that seemed

inordinately heavy, had a pinkish hue. It felt wrong. It didn't feel he would testify,

like normal trash. Curiosity got the best of him, and he opened the back.
