This is John Batchler, conversation with Richard Reinch, the editor-in-chief of Civitas Outlook,

published by a Civitas Institute at the University of Texas in Austin.

Here, Richard writes of a new collection of Alexander Solzhenits' speeches that he made

after he was exiled from the Soviet Union, 74 to the late 90s.

The speeches describe his response to the West. That's what they called America and Europe.

In the Gulags, where he spent many years, tortured years, the West.

And the irony is when he got to the West, living in a small town in Vermont, writing

his books, he was disappointed.

Here Richard explains the disappointment and why, having to do with a British

Prime Minister, unnamed. More of this tonight. There's also Solzhenitsyn saying later

in some of these speeches, you know, this, the occasion by piece was Notre Dame Press

of bringing out his exile speeches.

And speeches he gave after he was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1974 till he returned 20 years later.

And Soljanietz and says, when we were in the camps, we looked with West, with a certain amount of hope, with a certain amount of, would you be sort of freedom's champion,

this champion of the human spirit?

And Solzscheasen said when he, you know,

I think he's still in the camps and learns of a visit somehow

of the British Prime Minister to the Soviet Union who gives, you know, some

comments. And Social Niesin was struck down by the comments. He was brought low because they were

so banal and weak and sort of refusing to really defend the West against the Soviet Union

and sort of muddling over things.
