This is John Batchel, conversation with Joseph Sternberg,

the Wall Street Journal editorial page. He writes politically economics based in London. As we approach

Liberation Day, Joe says finally Europe is waking up to the fact that the President is very,

very, very keen on Liberation Day. This is the real thing. We'll all find out within hours what it

means for American citizens and consumers, what it means for American citizens and consumers,

what it means for American growth, but Europe is anxious in a way that we cannot be because

I think that a lot of European leaders, and particularly British Prime Minister Kirstarmer,

assumed at the very start of this Trump administration that the tariffs were just a negotiating ploy,

and that Trump didn't really mean it, and that even if there was some protectionism,

it wouldn't be broad-based, it wouldn't be particularly steep, and it also wouldn't be permanent.

And so I think that the real shock that is dawning as we rapidly approach Liberation Day in just a few hours for now,

is that actually Trump is deadly serious about this, that he is prepared to impose

enormous costs on the U.S. economy in pursuit of whatever objective Trump thinks he's pursuing

here, and that European leaders might not be able to bargain their way out of it.
