I always like to challenge people to think about police emerged.

You know, police emerged as slave patrols.

And there was a time before slave patrols where police didn't exist.

And people looked out for their interests and their neighbor's interests in a range of different ways.

Black and brown communities haven't always had the protection or the luxury of access to police.

And so in our communities, often we were forced to police our own communities,

meaning that when there was harm done, we had to restore harmony. We had to restore peace

ourselves without, you know, calling a number and watching someone come out to do it for us.

Yeah, I see. We had to have conversations with our neighbors. We had to know who our neighbors

were. We had to know what our neighbors wanted and believed in and cared about.

And we had to protect it with the same fervor that we protect our own visions and families and neighborhoods.
