This entire movie takes place over the course of not even a single day, just the course of a single baseball game.

And I love that it's not a high stakes game either.

This is just a local community baseball game.

The film is set in the 1990s, somewhere in rural Massachusetts, I believe.

What we know about them is that they have, you know, a ritual.

They've been coming to this field for a long time to play baseball.

This is going to be the last game they ever play because the diamond's going to get demolished and there's going to be a school put there.

That detail is incidentally not very important. There is no kind of sociopolitical agenda that this film has. What it signifies is nothing more or less than the passage of time. The fact that the passage of time brings with it changes. I actually think in its lack of importance, it's incredibly important because you can imagine a movie like this, like 9.9 movies out of 10, it would be an evil corporation

or like a sinister landlord has bought this and is going to build condos or a bank or something.

Exactly.

The fact that it's a school, which is probably better than this diamond, is so important.

That's right.

It makes this a movie without a villain.

And there's nothing in this movie that overly romanticizes this beer league. There's nothing in this

movie that romanticizes the bonds between these men. And that's why, I mean, this is one of my

favorite movies of the last few years. because I think this movie really articulates

a few kinds of feelings that I can't remember if I've ever seen articulated in a movie before.

It's a hymn to these very situational context-specific quasi-frenships.

Yes.

To these experiences that one is grateful for, but that don't really matter in the grand scheme of things.

Yes, that simultaneously don't matter, but you realize are actually the things you remember and value greatly.
