Summary

From war crimes overseas to revenge porn at home, it all comes back to social media. In Season 2 episode 5 of THE NEWSROOM ("News Night with Will McAvoy"), a dizzying number of Twitter- and Buzzfeed-related plots swirl around a single broadcast... and there's still a little time for a Trayvon Martin subplot, too. We are, of course, here again to talk about Aaron Sorkins, The Newsroom.

0:04.8

And Will and I have, we did not watch this episode together.

0:08.4

So we will be learning of each other's opinions live in studio for all of your pleasure.

I got to say off the top, Will, that this episode, namely season two, episode five, News Night with Will McAvoyie i had a lot more fun with this one than i did

0:23.8

with the last one we watched i think this is the first episode in quite a while of the newsroom

0:29.6

that has not employed this sort of elliptical storytelling device this kind of too clever by half

0:35.5

jigsaw puzzle style of narration. It feels like for the last

0:39.6

five or six episodes, like every episode has structurally been like an MC Escher drawing or a snake

0:46.5

eating its own tail. It's not clear like which timeline you're in always because everything

0:51.4

kind of looks the same. But this episode felt like a return to form,

0:56.1

not just because it doesn't do that, but because it manages to connect at least most of its plots

1:02.9

or some of its multiple plots with a grander theme, namely personal privacy, web gossip, internet

1:10.2

misogyny, that kind of thing. I mean,

1:12.9

hilariously, the sort of news background stuff, which in this case involves the murder of

1:18.1

Trayvon Martin, Syria, and also there's a plot about Will McAvoy's dad, which will come to.

1:24.7

Not really sure where that stuff fits in, but all of the major plots kind of

1:29.3

stitched together. So this one worked a little better for me than some of the more recent ones

1:33.8

we've been watching. And just finally, I will note, this episode does something else that's

1:37.8

interesting, which is that it's set on March 16th, 2012. It only takes place on that day. So it's more self-contained than the other ones.

1:47.0

And it actually jumps six months ahead in the timeline from the previous episode.

1:51.7

So perhaps that's what's contributing to my more warm reception of it, that it finally seems like we've broken out of that slew of episodes we were in before and now we're in the future.

2:01.4

There's a popular podcast called The Flop House. It's a bad movie podcast. And on every episode,
