Like most of Madden's films, this is set in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Madden's birthplace, one of the coldest major cities in the world.

It's loosely based on a story by Kazuo Ishigero, and that story was set in London.

I happened to own this movie on a DVD that I bought used from Rogers video back in the mid-2000s.

Speaking of great Canadian institutions.

Ted Rogers, he's my hero.

I watched a short documentary on the DVD where Madden says that he's interested in

mythologizing Winnipeg.

And he says it in this half-joking way because, like, mythologizing any part of Canada,

let alone Winnipeg, kind of goes something against our national spirit.

Nevertheless, I think it's fair to say that when I think of Winnipeg now,

I think of the vision that Guy Madden creates in his films.

Yeah, certainly.

I mean, I'm not sure I entirely agree, or perhaps I would add a caveat

to your characterization that Canada mythologizing itself goes against the grain. I mean, it seems to

me that all Canadian culture can do is sort of try to mythologize itself. And for me, the problem is

the mythologies people are trying to create can end up feeling a little bit artificial,

or they feel depersonalized in some way. They feel like attempts to reverse engineer something.

And something that has always struck me about Guy Madden's work, and one of the reasons why I value him so much and enjoy his work so much,

is that it simply does not suffer from this problem.

I remember when we discussed my Winnipeg and, you know, I found that quote from him where he said

something about wanted to give his birthplace, you know, the city he grew up in, you know,
