Summary

PATREON-EXCLUSIVE EPISODE - https://www.patreon.com/posts/71449739 In the mid-'90s, a car dealership in Texas offered contestants a chance to win a free truck if they could perform one feat of physical and mental agility: keep one hand on the truck for longer than anyone else. The documentary HANDS ON A HARDBODY (1997) captures the contest in all its agony. We're joined by John Semley to discuss what - if anything - this highly evocative document has to say about America.

incident where one of the contestants went to a nearby Kmart and bought a shotgun and

killed himself.

So after that, the, you know, this monstrous barbaric

1:13.5

competition that actually drove people into having, you know, paranoid delusions and hallucinations

1:20.5

and all manner of physical wear and tear was finally retired. So I was telling Luke this,

1:26.1

I message him about it after I watched the movie.

1:27.7

I was watching this and I thought this is a Michael and Us movie because it is so inscribed with,

1:34.0

I mean, I know you guys talk about the end of history so much.

1:36.2

So I don't know if I get to fill out a bingo card space just for saying it.

1:39.5

But with this very kind of hollow idea of American ideology, right? Like you have this idea, again,

1:45.2

we were talking about the lone wolf for this kind of spirit surviving against all odds.

1:49.9

It's very much about that. It's very much about who has the will to survive and win and

1:55.1

basically earn this Nissan truck. But then you have to constantly remind yourself in the way
