Well, moving on, I would like to talk about another problematic celebrity, Mr. Hugh Hefner,

the founder of Playboy Enterprises. I guess our main subject for this, for this episode,

is the new A&E documentary series Secrets of Playboy, although I think I'd like to just talk about,

have a bit of a jam session about Playboy in general.

So I've got also in the Will Sloan archives this issue that Playboy put out a couple weeks

after Hefner's death. It's a special tribute edition called Celebrating Heff. And it's full of

articles and testimonials by people who knew him. Norman Lear has an article. Richard Lewis, the Reverend Jesse Jackson,

Cindy Crawford,

Kim Basinger,

many people from all spheres of Hefner's life are in here.

And one of them is Bill Maher.

Boy, is that ever specific territory,

Bill Maher writing and Playboy.

And he has an article called Hefner versus the haters.

And he writes, since Hugh Hefner is very real and very important accomplishments in championing civil rights, gay rights, free speech rights and yes, women's rights are going to be, I'm guessing, amply covered by other contributors. I thought I'd take a

minute and say a big, fuck you to the people who thought the time to slander this man was right

after he died. I thought the rule was that everybody got a grace period. Was Hugh Hafner really such a

monster that he, above all others, is who we break that

rule for? And what were the crimes of which he was guilty? Isn't it funny? You read him. You just

feel the rhythm. I'll stop you right there. The answer to that question is, yes. I love reading

him because it's like, you know, there are certain writers where you hear it in their

voice. You hear the poetry of it. You can ride the intonation, you know, you can just hear his kind
