It turns out that before he died, Walt Disney had a vision for a kind of planned community that was going to be called Epcot.

Epcot stands for experimental prototype community of tomorrow.

And in the final months of Disney's life, it seems like this was the most important thing.

This was the thing that was really at the forefront of his mind.

He actually drew up a whole kind of master plan for it.

There are elaborate documents, sketches. And he also made a short promotional film, which we watched

for this week's episode. It's only about 24 minutes long. This was not available, I think, for several

decades anyway, to the general public. You can find it on YouTube. But it's sort of a pitch to

potential investors and other kind of

elites that he wanted to sell the project to. I mean, everything that you've just described in a

normal man would be called dementia, but in Walt Disney, it was called visionary. Now, Epcot still

technically exists today, or at least something called Epcot exists at Disney World in

Orlando, Florida today. And I mean, I remember when I went with my family in 1996 or 1997 on my

one and only trip to Disney World, we decided not to go to Epcot because it looked boring.

Generations of children have made that decision. And we should specify, I mean, so they, I guess they built something called Epcot,

but they never built the actual thing Disney was proposing. And when we,

when we tell you a little bit about what it was, you'll probably understand why.

And the need is not just procuring the old ills of old cities. We think the need is for starting from scratch on Virgin

land and building a special kind of new community. And whenever you read anything about Epcot,

there's exactly this kind of same dissonance where, you know, there's this weird blend of all

the like, this will be the happiest city in the world, this will be the greatest. And also,

everybody will be working at all times. There will be no voting control and there will be the happiest city in the world. This will be the greatest. And also, everybody will be
