When Kent State happens, the Hard Hat Riot and all that stuff, we talked about,

the movement fractures becoming, you know, these small sects of academics, entriest workersists

or armed struggle sects.

And Scott would eventually sort of team up with the SLA in a journalist's capacity.

But before that, he's hired at Oberlin in 1972 on the strength of his new left celebrity.

Once he gets the job there, he installs these reforms.

They included doing away with the entrance fees to athletic events,

placing greater emphasis on women's sports,

hiring a number of black head coaches

at the predominantly white school. Among those he brought in by Scott was sprinter Tommy

Smith of the black-gloved Olympic protest movement in Mexico City. Those are the people that did

the black power salute. His coaches even recruited a couple of ringers for the football team,

including a Hispanic quarterback who helped lead Oberlin to its first winning season in

years.
