Well, folks, we don't have a movie for you on this episode. We have something better. Yes, we have the

theater of the mind. That's right. We have a classic record from the year 1961. There are many ways in

which our government has invaded the precincts of private citizens, the method of earning a living.

So for those who aren't familiar, Ronald Reagan speaks out against socialized medicine

was an actual LP put out as part of something called Operation Coffee Cup,

which was an American Medical Association, Public Relations Campaign, PR Offensive offensive in the 50s and 60s.

And basically, you know, this was an attack on various efforts to expand Social Security,

basically into a form of what's now Medicare. And the line that the American Medical Association

took on this with the help of Ronald Reagan will it will actually be a very familiar one to anybody

who's followed American politics recently, because it is paint by the numbers, the same kind

of line of attack you heard from Sarah Palin, people remember the death panel stuff, basically

the panels of government bureaucrats are going to decide whether people live or die, etc.

But also, you know, the line of attack here is paint by the numbers the one that Democrats used

in the primaries, at least if you strip away the kind of overt anti-communist undertones of all this

or overtones, I should say.

The line Ronald Reagan takes on this record is pretty much is that any expansion of kind of the

social safety net, any expansion of taxation, anything like that is a kind of quarter step towards

totalitarian control of all life. One day, as Norman Thomas said, we will awake to find that we have socialism. And if you don't do

this and if I don't do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years

telling our children and our children's children what it once was like in America when men were free.

So I'd like to talk about a thing called the notwithstanding clause that we have here
