American Beauty is actually another interesting movie from this time that some people,

it's been a while since I've watched it,

but some people have said that it doesn't hold up.

It doesn't.

It's very of its time and everything that it's doing.

I also think that if you look at a lot of these movies,

I, of course, always kind of buck against the film bro thing.

But the late 1990s is a very, like, film bro era in the sense that it was just kind of about men dealing with their shit.

And, like, American Beauty is, like, man dealing with shit, the movie.

Like, that's all he's doing that's the whole movie um

and so like it it's it's very much from that perspective like the reason why american beauty

doesn't hold up is because it's misogynist but i think no one knew that it was misogynist at

the time or it just didn't click

because it was just like, yeah, he really needs to rebel against his wife and like how she

likes the house to be neat.

He really needs to lock up my house.

You know what?

There was a lot of us thinking about this today when I was walking around.

This era and then leading into the like the indie arts era with Garden State and all that stuff.

There were a lot of shots in film that were of like a middle aged man and he's like laying in bed but his eyes are open because he

doesn't feel like you know like his and it's like you know some sort of deep music is playing and it's

you know maybe like um a xylophone is kind of clinging here and there and it's like wow he's not
