... In May of 1993,

In May of 1993, I had my first novel published through a little boutique publisher.

And one night I took a cab from my hotel in Austin to a bookstore for my first ever signing.

I fell into conversation with my driver, Lee.

It was kind of a fascinating person.

Very deep voice, rocky almost, and a very vivid green eyes.

She'd gone to Ohio State for two years, studied the British poets, loved to read. She was dressed as kind of a hipster

tough girl with a tan leather jacket and a tattoo of a one-eyed parrot on the side of her neck.

She was funny, acerbic, asked me lots of questions about my work. She longed to find a community of writers to be a part of.

We said so long when she dropped me off and I tipped her very well.

About a year and a half later, I was watching a public television documentary at home in Dearborn.

On came a segment about a dozen people up in Ottawa,

living on a farm together, and dedicating themselves to the tenets of the old Shaker lifestyle,

communal living, pacifism, gender equality, celibacy. And there on the screen was someone describing what it was
