Martin Van Buren.

Thank you, Noah, for introducing Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States.

Just like the sixth president, John Quincy Adams,

Martin Van Buren is best known for his accomplishments before

and after becoming president. Before becoming president, he created the Democratic Party that

still exists today. Andrew Jackson was the first president to represent the new party,

followed by Martin Van Buren. Unfortunately, for Van Buren,

his presidency would not be quite as successful as Jackson's. Martin Van Buren was born in a small

town in upstate New York called Kinderhook. The town of Kinderahook is about 20 miles south of Albany, the capital of New York.

At 24 years old, Van Buren married a lady by the name of Hannah Hoze, who was a childhood friend of his and also happened to be a distant cousin.

They had five children together and Hannah would pass away only 12 years after they married. Martin Van Buren would choose not to marry

again. Before beating William Henry Harrison in the election of 1836, Van Buren served in the New York Senate, served as

Attorney General of New York, served as a governor of New York, and then as Secretary of State

for Andrew Jackson.

He was such a clever politician he was given many nicknames, including Little Magician and Red Fox of Kinderhook.

When he became president, the nickname he embraced was Old Kinderhook, even though he was the youngest

president to ever take office at the age of 54. Van Buren had some success as president. He can be credited with resolving

tension on the border of Maine and Canada. The U.S. nearly went to war with British Canada,
