Hi everybody today, my mommy is going to talk about Harry S. Truman.

Thank you, Noah, for introducing Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States.

Despite having the name Harry S. Truman, Harry Truman really did not have a middle name.

The letter S was added as an initial by his parents as a compromise.

His paternal grandfather's middle name was Ship, and his maternal grandfather's first name was Solomon.

Harry Truman was truly a common man,

spending most of his 20s working on the family farm in Missouri.

When World War I broke out,

Harry Truman led an army unit valiantly in France.

After World War I, he returned to Missouri, where he married

Elizabeth Bess, Virginia, who he had known since their days together in fifth grade. He spent a few

years working at a local clothing store before getting into politics. In 1922, he surprisingly won an election

to become supervisor of roads and buildings in Missouri's Jackson County. The following year,

Truman would start a decade-long run as a judge in Jackson County Court. His years in court would ultimately

propel him to a U.S. Senate seat where he would serve successfully for 11 years. The president at the

time, Franklin Roosevelt, was looking for another vice president heading into the 1944 election.

Franklin Roosevelt was running for an unprecedented fourth term,

and he saw his current vice president, Henry A. Wallace, as a problem,

and looked elsewhere for a running mate.

Truman emerged as his running mate, and Roosevelt was able to win a

fourth term despite his failing health and decreased popularity making Harry Truman the vice president.

Franklin Roosevelt would live less than 90 days into his fourth term, making Harry Truman the new president of the United States.
