Hi everybody! Today, my mom is going to talk about Calvin Coolidge.

Thank you, Noah, for introducing Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States.

Calvin Coolidge made a name for himself in the year 1919 when he was the governor of Massachusetts. That year, police officers in

Boston went on strike, and Coolidge was not pleased. He fired the striking police officers

and replaced them temporarily with the state militia. His opinion on the strike found its way into the newspapers when he was quoted as saying,

there is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, any time. His handling of the

police strike was celebrated, and he instantly became a force within the Republican Party.

Just a year later, he would become vice president.

Calvin Coolidge, like President Harding before him, was a Republican.

That is, one of the very few things that the two presidents had in common.

Warren Harding was outgoing and very sociable, while Calvin Coolidge was quiet and preferred to keep a low profile. His lack of

charisma would eventually earn him the nickname of Silent Cal. When Calvin Coolidge was serving as vice president under President Harding,

he was enjoying a vacation at his father's house in Vermont when he received the news that

President Harding had passed away. Calvin Coolidge was notified via messenger in the middle of the night

because his father did not own a telephone.

His father, who was a notary public, swore him in around 3 a.m.

After being sworn in, officially making Calvin Coolidge the 30th president of the United States,

he did something that very few would probably do in his

situation. He fell right back asleep. President Coolidge knew that he had to restore the faith of

the American people following the scandals that plagued the Harding administration. He replaced

all of the cabinet members that were involved in scandal

and even started an investigation of the scandalous activity of the previous cabinet. His first term
