Andrew Johnson was sworn in as president on April 15, 1865, following the death of Abraham Lincoln.

Andrew Johnson was Abe Lincoln's vice president during his very short second term. For his full

first term, Abraham Lincoln had another vice president by the name of Hannibal Hamlin, a Republican from Maine.

He decided to select a different running mate when he ran for re-election in 1864.

He wanted someone who could help him unite the country following the Civil War.

For that reason, Lincoln selected Andrew Johnson as a Democrat from Tennessee.

This would be the only time in history that a president selected a running mate from a different

political party. Andrew Johnson grew up in a poor family, and when his father passed away when

he was just three years old, matters got even

worse. When Andrew Johnson was 10, he studied how to be a tailor, and at the age of 18, he opened up

his own shop and started a successful business as a tailor in the town of Greenville, Tennessee.

One year later, at the age of 19, he married 17-year-old Eliza McArdle, and they had four children

over the next seven years, and a fifth child 18 years after the fourth.
