That was three decades of sectarian violence between Protestant Unionists and Roman Catholic nationalists,

when 3,500 people were killed, mostly civilians,

and when a province was ruled unhappily from London.

The President's speech marked the very real successes since,

and the power of smartly deployed American diplomacy.
