On the show, listeners write in with problems, big and small, and I try to solve them.

But this week, Hyperfix, the show itself, has a problem.

And no matter what we try, we simply have not figured out how to solve it. So if you listen to independent podcasts with any regularity,

you probably know that the podcast industry is not in the best shape. Over the last 10 years, the podcast industry expanded beyond anything that many of us could have dreamed of.

And then the bubble burst.

Advertising dollars started to dry up.

Corporate cash began shifting away from narrative journalism towards celebrity-driven chat shows.

And then, one after another, all of our favorite audio shop began to close.

And our friends, some of whom I consider the best producers in the business,

starting getting laid off from their jobs.

And then they got new jobs and got laid off from those.

And then they got laid off from the jobs they got after those jobs.

Hyperfix producer Emma Cortland has been laid off four times in the past three years.
