Well, it is pretty much spring. It's certainly spring in my mind right now as we sit here in the middle of March.

And that means that if you haven't been prepping for spring, you're probably actually a little bit behind the ball, but that's okay.

You can still get caught up. You know, I'm doing a lot of seed starting, a lot of irrigation setup, a lot of bad remediation.

Chris, I know you've got a long task list, so I'm curious what's on your mind right now.

Yeah, so in the last episode, we were talking about the weird annual things that I'm trying.

And I think the best spot for those cereal crops that I'm going to try is where I currently have two of my wooden raised beds.

So one of my tasks is to actually take those beds apart. Although I do love growing in raised beds, I feel like if I break those down, I'm going to have a lot more space to play with.

So I'm just going to spread the soil around and turn that into like an informal like bed. And I mean, I don't think it's like the right time to directly sew those cereals in there.

So what I'm going to do is cover crop the area. So I love field peas because they are fast to grow, even though the temperatures are still a little bit cooler.

Have those grow, break those down, and then work that into the soil so that when I am ready to plant whatever it is that goes into that spot, it'll be a nice like organic boost.

So that's one of the things that I'm going to be doing very soon.

And I love cover crops because my whole front garden area, the raised bed area, used to be this whole weedy spot.

There was a lot of horse tail and just annual weeds and actually through the act of cover cropping quite intensively with a whole bunch of different fast growing plants like crimson clover, buckwheat, borge, field peas, barley, rye.

I really just transformed the space into like a more fertile growing spot for also sorts of plants. So I guess in short, I'm just trying to improve the soil.

So that's like a big thing since I want to break down the raised beds and actually grow more in the native soil.

Yeah, that's a cool idea. I like that a lot. I actually really did like the way your raised beds were set up sort of with the I called them railroad ties when I was there. I didn't know a better word for it, but like those big pieces of it was cedar, right?

Yeah, the ones in the back were definitely cedar.

Yeah, I mean, I've been doing a decent amount of cover cropping. I mean, I have fortunately now, you know, decent chunk of land in the backyard and I haven't turned.

I would say fully about a third of it into anything and it's just sort of open area. And so I figured while I'm deciding what to do there, why not cover crop the whole thing?

So that's what we did. We took like a big old many pounds bag and just kind of scattered it, raked it all in, used overhead water and let it grow in.

And now it's like this huge sort of what I guess what and gardening, you know, newbie would say it's just a patch of weeds. But of course, we know that it's not there's clover, there's legumes in there and all that.

And then shock and I used a power plant or auger to drill in a hundred potatoes in there to just because like, hey, we had them.
