Emily had been sad for nearly a month.

She wasn't usually a sad person, but a sad thing had happened, and that, well, that made

her sad.

You see, a month ago, Emily's best friend in the whole world had moved house, and not

just around the corner, on the other side of town, but right across to the opposite side

of the country, and that left poor Emily feeling all alone.

Emily still did all the things she was supposed to do, like going to school, helping with chores

and brushing her teeth, but she'd always stop partway through doing anything and give

a little sigh because she was sad.

One night, Emily had gone up to bed early, still feeling sad.

She hadn't even bothered to look at a book before turning out her light.

Instead she'd just lay there, staring at the ceiling, and wondering if she'd have a

best friend ever again.

Eventually though, she did fall asleep, and she stayed that way until the early hours

of the morning, when a weird noise woke her up.

Serious, she hopped out of bed, and peered out of the window to see if she could see the

source of the noise.

It would be dawn soon, and so the sky was getting lighter, but it was still dark enough

to show a strange light bobbing through the air.

Emily couldn't take her eyes off it, as it dipped and weaved, making the weird, whirring

noise that had woken her.
