Has your dog ever been so overexcited they just can't seem to listen, and it's frustrating for you? Dogs who want to go swimming, for a car ride, or a walk might be so intent on what they want they might not even sit when you ask, and you know they know how to sit! There are tools to fix the challenge, and you can use what your dog loves to do. We're looking at the science of the Premack Principle and how you can transfer the value for what your dog loves to you.
In the episode you'll hear:
• How my puppy could not listen when she was outside with the other dogs.
• The IF and THEN of contingencies in dog training.
• About Premack's Principle.
• Why to think about all the things that your dog loves that are safe.
• How to use contingencies to your advantage.
• Why the value your dog has for what they love transfers to what you want.
• What my dog Buzz taught me through his love of swimming and water.
• How the value Buzz had for swimming transferred to our relationship.
• Why the low probably behavior needs to be achievable for your dog when you start.
• The reason you need to be clear on what behaviour you want for clarity for your dog.
• The importance of your dog's history of reinforcement for the low probability behavior.
• Why not to repeat cues and how to lower the intensity of what your dog wants with distance.
• How I used Reinforcement Zone (RZ) with my puppy, This! so she could run with dogs.
• About training an excellent recall in all locations.
• How to play my new game called "I Think You Must Be Lost".
• Why to break things down, so everyone has success.
• What you can easily do today to start premacking.

| 0:00.0 | If you've ever tried to deal with your dog when they're super excited and they just can't seem to listen to you and you've got frustrated by that, then today's podcast is for you. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shape |
| 0:23.2 | My Dog. What I'm talking about are dogs when they are walking at the park and they see a big |
| 0:28.7 | swimming hole with other dogs swimming in there and they just go crazy or they know you're |
| 0:33.6 | about to take them for a hike or a car ride and they're just bouncing off the walls, |
| 0:38.5 | or maybe their favorite person is walking through the door. |
| 0:41.5 | And all of the good training you've given to them is gone. |
| 0:45.0 | They can't seem to listen when you ask them to do a simple behavior that they should really know |
| 0:49.5 | how to do. |
| 0:50.9 | Today, I'm going to give you the tools to fix that. And it actually is going to be easier |
| 0:57.6 | than you think. I'm also going to talk about a problem that I've been having with my nine-month-old |
| 1:03.0 | puppy. It's been happening since she was young. If she's outside with my other dogs, it's like I |
| 1:09.5 | don't exist. It's like she can't listen. |
| 1:12.7 | I'm going to walk you through the step-by-step process that I did. |
| 1:16.5 | And it's based on contingencies. |
| 1:20.1 | Two important words when we're talking about contingencies in dog training, and they are, |
| 1:25.0 | if and then, if you sit at the door, then I will open it and you can run |
| 1:33.8 | outside and rip around with the other dogs. But there's criteria about that. You have to hold |
| 1:40.2 | that sit while I open the door and while I let the other dogs go out first. |
| 1:45.9 | If you can hold your sit, then you get to go outside. |
| 1:50.9 | In the scientific terms, it's called the Premac Principle. |
| 1:54.8 | And just stick with me, a little bit of science here. |
| 1:57.2 | The opportunity to engage in a high probability behavior can be used to reinforce the animal |
