Summary

Preachers preach theology, but what about our theology on preaching? Should sitting under the preached word take priority over other forms of scriptural intake? What about one-on-one discipleship, small-group Bible studies, biblical counseling, and Christian fellowship - do they take the backseat to sunday morning service? For some of us, a sermon is simply informative, but to others it’s one of God’s means to confront and encourage us in our Christian lives. That said, what’s your theology on preaching, truly and functionally? The Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals would like to offer you a free MP3 entitled "The Regulative Principle of Preaching" by Steve Lawson. Evangelicals. We all know preachers preach theology, but what about our theology on preaching?

0:35.6

Should sitting under the preached word take priority over other forms of scriptural intake?

0:41.4

Let's hear what Todd, Carl, and Amy have to say.

0:57.8

Well, thanks for joining us today.

1:02.0

And Carl and Amy, I've got a question that I think maybe some people wonder about periodically,

1:09.2

which is why do reformed churches make such a big deal about preaching?

1:13.0

Now, to set that in context a little bit, we all know and are familiar with and have, I'm sure, a great deal of appreciation for a lot of the non-denominational,

1:19.2

or I'm sorry, let's say, parochurch discipleship ministries that are out there. Some of them

1:26.5

have done great work over the years. We're thankful

1:29.1

for what they do. But oftentimes, my experience has been there can be some confusion then over

1:37.1

the primacy of preaching. In other words, the emphasis on one-on-one discipleship or small group

1:43.2

discipleship and Bible study can sometimes be seen

1:46.9

as being more effective or more practical than the preached word. I know I heard that a lot growing up.

1:54.0

You all may have heard that as well. How often do we hear, oh, well, you know, we don't want

1:57.8

just preach a sermon at them. Or, you know, being with somebody where you can really talk about it is so much better than just hearing

2:03.3

somebody preach a sermon at you. Well, we take exception with that. And we hope that the rest

2:10.8

of reformed churches out there, whether the Reformed Baptist or Presbyterian, would take

2:14.7

exception to that sort of a dichotomy. So let's talk about that a little bit.

2:18.9

You know, why do we make such a big deal about preaching?

2:21.4

What does preaching do?
