Summary

Over and over again we’re called to live differently as followers of Jesus. The way we defend ourselves is one example of living counter culturally and exactly what we’re praying for this week. When we are wronged the world returns the favor with equal vengeance. But the reality is that real justice only comes from the Lord, and we’re called to wait on him who is faithful, upright, and just. (Deuteronomy 32:4).

Join me in praying this week for our families in all the places where we are tempted to defend ourselves. Let’s be reminded that the Lord is looking for opportunities to be gracious to us, and only in him will we find true rest and strength from the enemies we face.

Can’t wait to pray with you this week!

P.S. We would be so grateful if you’d consider sharing Pardon the Mess with a friend. Encourage those you know and love to join us in praying each week by forwarding this email or sending a link to the show. Thank you!

I'm so glad you're with us today.

We're praying for our kids this week,

0:19.2

and we're talking about defending ourselves.

0:26.2

What's the key to defending ourselves? And Psalm 12 is the Psalm that we're focused on. It's the Psalm of David. And here's a couple key verses. It's verses two and seven. Everyone lies to their

neighbor. They flatter with their lips, but harbor deception in their hearts. You Lord will keep the

needy safe and will protect us forever

from the wicked. Okay, and so here we have this Psalm of David, and I love that David's just

0:44.3

brutally honest in this Psalm. And we've got, picture this, David's like a fierce warrior, right? He's known for that.

0:50.5

He has won battles when all odds are against him. He is brave. He is tough. And yet he is so

done right now because people are backstabbing and gossiping and he is over it. And it's like a truism

1:03.5

of life right there. Like you'd almost rather someone physically hurt us than to go through all of

1:09.6

the emotional baggage of what people say and how they

1:12.3

undermine us and the things they do behind our back and say about us.

1:15.7

And so I love that David just being really honest about this.

1:19.7

And so what we're going to do is think about how does the world handle this?

1:22.8

How does the world offend themselves?

1:24.1

And how should we be doing this?

1:25.5

Because I think we're called to do things counterculturally in a lot of respect, most respects, but especially here. And so I did what every

1:32.6

wise person would do, said sarcastically. When you want to know how to defend yourselves, I went to
