Summary

"In today's Conversations for the Journey, host and Care Director Wes Butler leads us in praying through Acts 9:20-31. This week, Wes leads us in prayer for three things found in Acts 9:31: that the church would walk in peace with one another and be built up, that we would walk in fear of the Lord and would receive comfort from the Holy Spirit, and that more people would come to know Christ. This is the Join the Journey weekly prayer podcast.

0:13.1

Unlike our new Tuesday teaching episodes, this time is set apart for guided prayer as we abide in Jesus together.

0:20.6

Here's your host, Wes Butler.

0:23.8

Welcome to Conversations for the Journey, a weekly podcast to help us commune with our God through

0:28.4

prayer in response to what he has spoken to us through His Word. We are so glad that you are back

0:33.6

with us this morning as we just dive into the journey. And I want to take just a moment just to

0:38.8

remind us of why it is that we do what we do on this podcast. What we are trying to acknowledge is

0:44.9

that as we read God's Word, God's Word actually gives us vocabulary to speak back to God.

0:51.3

It actually can and should inform the way that we pray and the things that we ask for. And so oftentimes, if you're in a place where you're just like, man, I don't even know what to pray for, the best thing for us to do is to turn to God's word and say, well, what is God's word saying and how can I respond to it? Just this week I came across this quote from Eugene Peterson,

1:11.8

where he just said this.

1:12.8

He says, look, left to ourselves,

1:15.0

we will pray to some God who speaks what we like hearing

1:17.8

or to the part of God we manage to understand.

1:21.2

But what is critical is that we speak to the God who speaks to us

1:24.8

and to everything that he speaks to us.

1:29.0

What is essential in prayer is not that we learn to express ourselves, but that we learn to answer God. And so as we do this

1:35.5

podcast each week, it is such a privilege to look at God's word and to perhaps be informed

1:41.2

to pray in ways that we wouldn't otherwise in response to who God actually is,

1:46.2

not just to our ideas of God, not to just the parts of God that we like, but to this God who is

1:52.1

speaking to us and revealing himself to us. And so in this passage that we are looking at this week

1:57.0

on the journey, we are kind of right in the middle of Acts 9, and we're seeing the early moments of Saul, soon to become Paul's Christian life and just some of the challenges that he faces.

2:09.4

But as I was looking and reading through this passage, my heart and my eyes were just drawn to verse 31.
