Summary

"In today's Conversations for the Journey, host and Care Director Wes Butler leads us in praying through Acts 6:1-7 This week, Wes leads us in prayer for three things: that the needs of our body would be met through our church, that leaders would be raised up to care for people, and that the Gospel would continue to spread. Unlike our new Tuesday teaching episodes, this time is set apart for guided prayer as we abide in Jesus together.

Here's your host, Wes Butler.

Welcome to Conversations for the Journey. It is good to be back. I am your host, West Butler,

0:28.9

and thanks to Grant Wilkie for filling in for me the last few weeks, and it is good to be back

0:34.4

with you friends. As you know, this is a weekly podcast to help us commune with our God through prayer in response to what he has spoken to us through his word.

0:42.0

And so as we continue this march through the book of Acts, we want to take some time this week to just pray according to God's words.

0:49.4

Specifically this week, we're going to be focusing on just the first seven verses of Acts chapter 6.

0:54.8

This is a really important moment in the life of the early church.

0:58.7

And it's so instructive to us in many ways and certainly can be instructive to us in our prayer lives.

1:04.0

And so I'd love just to read this passage since it's short, and then we'll talk about a few things.

1:08.2

But it just says this.

1:09.2

Now, in these days, when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in daily distribution. And the 12 summoned the full number of the disciples and said, it is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute,

1:29.6

full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to

1:35.4

prayer and to the ministry of the Word. And what they said pleased the whole gathering. And then it

1:41.1

goes on to tell us the names of the men that they had chosen. And then it finishes

1:45.3

with saying, and the word of God continued to increase. And the number of the disciples multiplied

1:50.0

greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith. And so just a few

1:55.8

things here that jump out to me as I read through that passage that caused me to want to pray. First, it's just this

2:02.1

idea of the needs within the church being met by the structure and the giftings that are unique

2:08.3

within the church body. We see this gap that needs to be filled, and it's so interesting that

2:13.8

what takes place is that the disciples begin to put some structure in place. Sometimes we see
