Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani received more than a million votes as he won the New York

City mayoral election this week. Today, we will talk about

the practical implications of Mamdani's victory, how the ruling class in New York is likely to

react to his election, and some of the strategic and theoretical questions for socialists as it

regards elections and what political power actually means.

Leanne, Mamdani's election really was a shocker for the U.S. ruling class.

People all over the country are talking about it.

People who are progressive are, of course, very, very excited.

As you mentioned, he got more than a million votes.

It was the largest turnout for a mayoral election in New York City since 1969.

And he got 50 percent, more than 50 percent of the vote. But it's not just people in the United States, people all over the world who are

progressive, especially are paying attention to politics in the United States, because when something

really progressive takes place in the United States, the whole world takes

notice and people are hopeful because the actual restraint on progressive politics being implemented
