You know, in the world of sports drinks, there's one brand that stands apart. You know the one

Gatorade invented nearly six decades ago by a team of doctors at the University of Florida. The sports

drink's name is a hat tip to the university's mascot, the Gators. Doctors at the university

realized that football players were being affected by that Florida heat

and needed to replace electrolytes, so they started to develop a drink to do just that.

Early versions tasted like seawater, we're told, and were so bad that players, well, let's

just say that the drink didn't stay down very long, fortune reports. Once they added lemon

juice to the mix, though,

the product we know was born. Two years later, the Gators won the Orange Bowl for the first time.

Hmm, coincidence? Since then, Gatorade, which is owned by PepsiCo, has become synonymous with sports.
